Consulting Firms, Benchmarking, and the Politics of Ratings

Speakers Bios

Michael Savage is a former academic and a former consultant. With a PhD in US History from the University of Toronto, he has been a course instructor at the University of Toronto and the Ahmanson Postdoctoral Instructor in History at the California Institute of Technology. Following his return to Canada, Michael’s search for employment in higher education led him into higher education consulting, which included two stints with Higher Education Strategy Associates (HESA) and one at Nous Group. He is now the Senior Research Analyst at the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) and is thrilled to work on behalf of public education (and to no longer be a consultant).

Norma Möllers is Associate Professor of Sociology at Queen’s University, where she teaches on how science and technology shape relations of power and inequality in contemporary societies. Her research has examined the neoliberalization of science, AI and inequality, and more recently the coloniality of digital capitalism and transformations of state power. Her talk at the teach-in will situate Queen’s recent benchmarking exercises within scholarship on governance by numbers as a means to extend market rationality to public sector organizations.

David McDonald is Professor of Global Development Studies at Queen’s University and Director of the Municipal Services Project. He has conducted research in over 50 countries, including studies on benchmarking and the development of alternative indicators of ‘good’ public service delivery. His most recent book is Meanings of Public and the Future of Public Services.
